Wagner's operas all have their roots in myths and legends, and therefore lend themelves to a great deal of interpretation and offer limitless opportunities for conceptual stagings. My idea is to set the story in a European capital in the late 19th century. Tannhäuser is a young aristocrat who, seeking to escape from the moral and social demands of the elite society into which he has been born, has entered the decadent world of the demi-monde. The Venusburg is an after-hours nightclub in which Venus is the featured act. | ||||
