| This production, originally designed for Baltimore Opera Company in 2001 and directed by Bernard Uzan, has been presented at Kentucky Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Minnesota Opera, Atlanta Opera, and most recently Florida Grand Opera in February of 2008. According to the wishes of the producing company, I sought to evoke the historical locations in Rome in the story's original period of 1800. I have spent about three years of my life in Rome, and I find the mystery and grandeur of the Eternal City to be eternally fascinating. It is in many ways a very theatrical city, and a fitting backdrop to such an intensely emotional and consciously theatrical work. This kind of traditional production style has all but disappeared from many of the world's opera stages, but it still elicits a strong and positive response from today's audiences. Would I do Tosca differenlty if asked again? Probably, though I appreciated the chance to execute large-scale realism. It is a rigorous lesson in scenecraft, and excellent practice for any designer. | |
